WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS IN TANZANIA EFFECTIVE 1ST OF MARCH 2019
Tanzania Road Authority (TANROADS) will start to strictly enforced Weight Restriction of containers moving to and from Dar es Salaam port via road effective 1st of March 2019. The Eastern African Community Vehicle Control Act 2016 covers not only Tanzania but neighboring countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
The law passed in 2017 aims to protect roads by controlling overloading. A transporter operating vehicle of a gross vehicle weight to 3,500 kgs or more shall be weighed in every weighing station that is situated along the Regional Truck Road Network in East Africa Regions.
The permissible maximum Gross Vehicle Weight shall be 56 metric tonnes, subject to the following conditions:
1. The vehicle shall have a maximum of seven (7) axles.
2. The GVW shall be limited in relation to the vehicle spatial axle load distribution of using the bridge formula.
The weight in axle of super single tyres has been lowered to 8.5 tonnes, from 10 tonnes.
In terms of maximum cargo weight per size of container, please refer to below:
Maximum cargo weight for 40’ft should be 25 Tons + Tare
Maximum cargo weight for 20’ft heavy should read 25 Tons + Tare
Maximum cargo weight for 20’ft light should read 11 Tons + Tare
For Special categories of Vehicle loads such as abnormal loads, awkward loads, hazardous loads, unstable loads and super loads requires special permit issued by Minister of relevant Partner State.
Any forms of infringement of this regulation is liable to a fine not exceeding $15,000 or 3 years imprisonment or both.
Customers’ compliance is a MUST, otherwise containers will not be permitted to be transported further that may result to any delays. All charges and related cost will be under Customer’s responsibility.
